Aunque los colonos españoles trajeron cerveza a Panamá hace siglos, no fue hasta principios del siglo XX que Panamá comenzó a elaborar su propia cerveza. La Panama Brewing & Refrigerating Company abrió sus puertas en 1909 y comenzó a elaborar la primera cerveza nacional, Balboa Lager, en 1910. Otras compañías siguieron su ejemplo. En 1914, la Atlantic Brewing & Refrigeration Company creó la cerveza Atlas. Estas compañías se fusionaron hace años y ahora se llaman Cervecería Nacional. Estas grandes cerveceras siguen vigentes, pero las microcervecerías han llevado la cerveza a un nuevo nivel en Panamá.
